Elective Surgery

Read about our booking times, admissions timelines and other elective surgery information.

What we do

The Department of Health has devised an elective surgery waiting list policy, which we use to categorise your clinical urgency.

Your doctor will assess the urgency of your surgery and place you in one of the following categories:

Category 1: When admission within 30 days desirable for your condition when it has the potential to deteriorate quickly to the point that it may become an emergency.

Category 2: When admission within 90 days is desirable due to your clinical condition.

Category 3: When admission within 365 days is desirable due to your clinical condition.

The timelines provided by the Department of Health are desirable time frames.  We aim to treat you within these time frames. However, from time to time more urgent cases may result in longer time frames.

During your waiting time, if you believe your condition has worsened, go back to your local doctor for review.

Booking dates

Once you have been placed on the Elective Surgery Wait list for your procedure, we will contact you with a date.

This may mean that you may not be contacted for some time. To make contacting you can have the shortest delay, please notify our Elective Surgery Booking office (8345 1947) of any changes to your mailing address or contact numbers.

Please contact the Elective Surgery Booking Office or Endoscopy Bookings (8345 6015) if you no longer need or want your procedure.

If you change need to change your date, we will attempt to provide a new booking as early as possible.

Please note that you may be removed from the waiting list if you:

  • defer your procedure
  • fail to attend on two occasions
  • indicate that you will not be available for treatment for a long period of time.

Not all surgery is performed at all hospital locations, therefore at times campus preference cannot be accommodated.

Interpreter Service

We understand that relatives may offer their services to interpret during a medical appointment. However, because we are discussing your medical condition, it is important that we provide you with an interpreter who can help you understand the surgery you are about to have.

Your relatives are welcome to attend clinic and appointments with you. Tell our staff if you need an interpreter.
