Your stay

During your stay, midwives will provide care alongside a team of:

  • Obstetricians and medical staff
  • Paediatricians
  • Social Workers
  • Physiotherapists
  • Dieticians
  • Lactation Consultants

Typical hospital stay durations:

  • Vaginal birth: 24–48 hours
  • Caesarean Section: 48–72 hours
  • Actual length of stay depends on your and your baby’s health needs.

If you are part of the Midwifery Group Practice (Caseload) and all is well, you may go home 4–6 hours after birth, with follow-up care at home.

Follow-Up care

After discharge, a midwife will visit you at home within 24–48 hours. Before leaving hospital, we will also refer you to the Maternal & Child Health (MCH) service in your local council area.

  • If you do not hold a valid Medicare card, you may not be eligible for MCH services.
In the case of a life threatening emergency, call 30020.
