Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

The Intensive Care Unit’s (ICU) at Western Health are located at Footscray Hospital and Sunshine Hospital. Our ICU’s consist of twenty-seven bed spaces and admit around 1000 patients per year.

We provide treatment and care to people with severe and life-threatening conditions using specialist staff and equipment for a diverse range of critically ill patients.

Care in ICU is provided by a team of staff including doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, dieticians and other trained professionals.  The ICU team works closely with medical specialities to develop individual treatment plans for our patients.

The ICU is supported by the Critical Care Outreach team, comprised of ICU Liaison Nurses who provide a consultation and referral service for the management of patients with high acuity and complex needs. The ICU Liaison team also respond to all adult medical emergency and adult Code Blue calls.

Visiting Hours

Our priority and focus is the care of our patients, and visits from loved ones is an important part of recovery. There are a number of conditions for visiting the ICU, as the ICU is a specialty area providing close monitoring and treatment of patients who may be very ill. Please speak with staff who are caring for your loved one if you have any questions about visiting hours.

  • 12:00pm to 8pm, 7 days per week
  • Two visitors at the bedside at a time
  • Children may visit but please discuss with ICU staff prior to visiting.
