Visitors and Infection Prevention

It is a proven reality that visits by relatives and friends to patients in hospitals benefit their recovery.

Your help to reduce the risk of infection to patients is also crucial to a speedy recovery. This can be done by following a few simple guidelines when visiting the hospital.

  • We know that Norovirus (most common gastroenteritis causing virus) is active in the community. It is therefore advisable that you do not visit patients in the hospital if you or any members of your family or anyone you have been in contact with have had any diarrhoea and or vomiting in the previous two days.
  • Do not visit anyone in the hospital if you or any member of your family or anyone you have been in contact with has had flu like symptoms such as, runny of stuffy nose, headache and or body aches, cough and/or sore throat, chills, fatigue, and temperature.
  • Observe any visiting restrictions that may be in place. These are usually indicated by clear signs.
  • Follow any other instructions given to you by staff
  • Always use the alcohol hand rub/gel provided for visitors at the entrances to the hospitals/wards both on arrival and when you leave. If you are visiting a restricted ward/area, please wash your hands with soap and water before leaving the ward/area.
  • Children must be supervised at all times while visiting hospitals.
