Thyroid Tumours

What we do

Western Health provides a multi-disciplinary service of Endocrinologists, Surgeons and where required, Medical Oncologists. We have close links with the Endocrinology Unit at The Alfred who provide a high dose radioactive iodine service for Western Health patients when required. Rarely, we also require the services of external beam Radiation Oncologists, also at The Alfred. We have monthly multi-disciplinary meetings with Endocrinologists, Endocrine Surgeons, Pathologists and Nuclear Medicine Physicians to discuss patient care and plan treatment in an evidenced based manner.

The roles of these team members are:

  • Endocrinologists: assess and diagnose patients with thyroid cancer and coordinate long term management
  • Endocrine surgeons: have specialist training in thyroid cancer surgery
  • Medical oncologists: supervises oncology treatment when occasionally required for thyroid cancer

Referrals

Patients will need a referral from their GP or medical practitioner to attend a specialist clinic. Please bring;

  • copies of any films or disks with images of any scans or tests, and
  • any medications that you are currently on.

This will help our doctors see what tests you have already had and know how to help you best.

Referrers

Please direct referrals and any other relevant information to the Endocrinology clinic to assess patients with suspicious thyroid nodules or with known thyroid cancer. Care is then co-ordinated with the Endocrine Surgeons. Some patients with known thyroid cancer may be referred directly to the endocrine surgeons and care is then jointly arranged with the endocrinologists.
More information about how to refer to Western Health is available here.
