Newborn Services

What we do

Newborn Services is a 30-bed neonatal unit encompassing a mixture of intensive care, high dependency and special care cots. It is one of five Level 6 Neonatal units in Victoria and admits approximately 1600 babies per year.

The unit currently cares for babies of 26 weeks gestation and above.

The team on Newborn Services is made up of Neonatologists, specialised Nursing staff and a wide array of allied health professionals.

Neonatal Continued Care at Home

Neonatal Continued Care at Home (CCH) is a home-based service for neonates with ongoing needs. CCH provides a safe and more effective service while supporting the transition to home after an inpatient stay/admission at Newborn Services at Western Health (WH).

There are two branches of the Neonatal CCH service:

1. Hospital in the Home (HITH)

The family and neonate require a daily review (visit or phone call) by a Registered Nurse (neonatal CCH nurse) to support neonates with complex needs, or who might require short term support while transitioning to home.

2. Post-Acute Care (PAC)

The PAC service is a nurse led service that provides education and support to the family/carer during the transition from hospital admission to discharge home.
