Australasian Triage Scale

On arrival to ED, patients are prioritised using the Australasian Triage Scale (ATS).

This is a nationwide system from which highly skilled triage staff conduct a risk assessment to prioritise the most acutely unwell patients - life or limb-threatening illness – first. Those with less urgent conditions will then be seen in medical priority order. All efforts are made by our specialist team of doctors and nurses to see patients in a reasonable timeframe, and we ask patients to please present to triage with any concerns while waiting, particularly if a change in condition is noted.

Our Emergency Departments

Phone:
(03) 8345 1333
Location:
The Emergency entrance is on Majorca Street, St Albans, near the Western Ring Road off ramp for Furlong Rd. It is 1km from Ginifer train station.
We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Transport and Parking
There is a drop off zone near the entrance to emergency at Sunshine Hospital. There is a strict 10 minute time limit in this zone.

Main areas of treatment
The Emergency Department treats both adults and children across the  whole range of emergency conditions. Some specialties are site-specific to either Sunshine or Footscray campus and therefore patients may need to be transferred to another campus of Western Health after receiving emergency care. Severely injured patients are not normally brought by ambulance to Sunshine Hospital, being taken rather to one of the major trauma centres in Melbourne (The Royal Melbourne, The Alfred or the Royal Children's Hospital).

In the case of a life threatening emergency, call 30020.
