Expanding Health Services in the West

From 1 July 2021, Djerriwarrh Health Services’ staff and facilities joined the Western Health network.
The newly expanded Western Health service will deliver a significant improvement for health services in Melbourne’s Western growth corridor. The service, which employs more than 8000 people across 13 campuses and sites, will continue to attend to the healthcare needs of 985,000 Victorians.
The new hospital at Melton will be operated by Western Health once it is operational.
A key aspect of the amalgamation, and even more importantly after the last year with additional pressures on health services during the pandemic, is that there will be no net loss of employment as a result of the amalgamation.
Background
The voluntary amalgamation followed an extensive consultation process with the community.
Following the State Government’s 2019 announcement that a new Melton Hospital will be operated by Western Health, the services began exploring the appropriate governance structure to ensure ongoing delivery of high-quality care to the growing community in Melbourne’s west.
The first round of consultation took place from January – March 2020 and a second round was held in November – December 2020.
These consultations included face-to-face and virtual consultations with members of the local community and staff from both services.
A dedicated website was set up providing the latest updates on the amalgamation process and provided an avenue for further community feedback to be sent through to the services.
In February 2021, a virtual public presentation was held, providing an overview of the potential amalgamation process to date, a summary of the community engagement and feedback received, an overview of the community survey results and outline the next steps in the process.
Both services were amalgamated under a single Western Health banner on 1 July 2021 at which point a one-year transition commenced.
