Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

Western Health’s Intensive Care Units are located at Footscray Hospital and Sunshine Hospital. Together, our ICUs have 27 beds and provide care for around 1,900 patients each year with serious or life-threatening conditions.

Who provides care

Our specialist ICU team includes doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, dietitians, and other trained professionals. We work closely with other medical teams to create individual care plans for each patient.

Coordinated care beyond the ICU

Our ICUs are supported by the Critical Care Outreach ICU Liaison Nurses. These are experienced critical care nurse consultants and nurse practitioners provide specialised support to patients with complex or high-risk needs who have been discharged from the ICU and are now on general wards. They also respond to all adult medical emergencies and Code Blue calls.

Visiting the ICU

We understand how important visits from loved ones are to a patient’s recovery. Because the ICU is a specialty area providing close monitoring and treatment of seriously ill patients, there are a few guidelines we ask that you to observe to help keep everyone safe.

• Visiting hours: 12pm – 8pm every day.
• Maximum of two visitors at the bedside at one time.
• Children can visit, but please speak with the ICU staff before bringing them in.
