What we do
Our gynaecology services support women with a variety of gynaecology based concerns.
Services and facilities
We provide the following Specialist Clinics for patients who require assessment and management of gynaecological conditions:
General Gynaecology
This service provides care for gynaecological conditions including:
- abnormal menstrual bleeding (Heavy, irregular or absent menses or postcoital bleeding)
- adnexal pathology
- cervical and endometrial polyps
- complications related to female genital cutting
- contraception and IUD insertion/difficult removal
- dyspareunia
- endometriosis investigation and management (in collaboration with Minimally Invasive Surgery specialist, COGU imaging and Colorectal Unit)
- investigation of pelvic masses
- menopause management
- pelvic pain
- peri-menopausal conditions
- Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
- post-menopausal bleeding
- recurrent miscarriage
- subfertility requiring investigation
- urinary incontinence
- vulval disease, itch/pain and skin conditions
The Gynaecology services at Bacchus Marsh are Medicare Benefit Scheme (MBS) funded. They are bulk billed and therefore there is no out of pocket fee associated with this service.
Adolescent Gynaecology
This service is currently unavailable. Please refer adolescents under 18 years of age to the RCH Adolescent Gynaecology Services.
Advanced Practice Physiotherapy
This service provides you with the following physiotherapy treatments:
- Pelvic Organ Prolapse Physiotherapy led Pessary clinic (POPPY)
- Pelvic floor physiotherapy
Advanced Laparoscopy Service
This service provides the following procedures:
- Advanced laparoscopic surgery to treat severe endometriosis.
- Combined colorectal and gynaecological surgery including bowel resection to treat complex gynaecological conditions.
- Transabdominal cerclage for cervical insufficiency.
Colposcopy service
Our Colposcopy service helps you with the management of all screen detected cervical abnormalities, postcoital bleeding and other conditions referred using the Cervical Cancer Screening Guidelines from the Cancer Council.
Early Pregnancy Assessment Service (EPAS)
Our Early Pregnancy Assessment Service staff of medical, nursing and imaging clinicians help you with management of complications during early pregnancy (under 16 weeks).
Gynaecological Oncology
Our gynaecological oncology service is a subspecialist service providing multidisciplinary medical and surgical care if you have precancerous and cancerous gynaecological conditions, including:
- gynaecological cancers including premalignant conditions
- complex hyperplasia with atypia of endometrium
- Vulval intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN)/ Vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia (VAIN) that has been lost to follow up.
IUD (Intrauterine Device Contraceptive) clinic
Our IUD Clinic provides IUD insertion if you are a patient needing specialist care, difficult retrievals/ failed insertion or removals.
Melton Sexual and Reproductive Health Hub
This free and confidential service provides clinical services and direct patient care as well as health education and promotion in the community to people in Melton area and surrounds.
This includes clinical services and direct patient care as well as health education and promotion in the community.
Services include:
- health promotion and education
- contraception
- sexually transmitted infection screening (STI)
- cervical screening tests (CST)
- human papillomavirus (HPV) immunisation
- early pregnancy counselling
- reproductive choices (including medical and surgical abortions).
Pelvic Floor Service
Our Pelvic Floor Service assists with:
- assessment and management of post-partum anorectal dysfunction and Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injuries (OASI) including mode of birth counselling
- bladder pain
- fistulae
- Outpatient cystoscopy – including outpatient Botox for overactive bladder
- pelvic organ prolapse
- trans-vaginal mesh-related complications or concerns – mesh revision post incontinence procedures
- urinary incontinence including transvaginal tape, autologous fascial sling, laparoscopic approaches.
- urodynamics
- voiding difficulty.
Public Fertility Care
This service works in conjunction with the Royal Women’s Hospital in the management of subfertility including fertility treatments. The public fertility care service model is focused on improving access for people who currently have limited access to private services.
Reproductive Choices service
This service offers surgical termination of pregnancy between 7 – 13+6 gestation for pregnancies for disadvantaged women with strict limited eligibility criteria. This service does not offer medical termination of pregnancy except for miscarriages. GP referral required with relevant dating ultrasound and bloods.
Women’s Health Hub at Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s
Our GP-led clinic aims to ease symptoms and improve quality of life for women awaiting their first gynaecological specialist clinic appointment. This will include therapies for menstrual disorders, pelvic pain, menopause and other women's health issues. The Women’s Health Hub will expand the reproductive choices service to provide an option for medical termination of pregnancy.
Urogynaecology
A Specialist service with highly skilled multidisciplinary team led by consultant Gynaecologists with a special interest in pelvic floor issues including pelvic organ prolapse and continence issues. Review of birth-related pelvic trauma (OASIS) is managed in by this team.
Who this service is for
Public Fertility Care
To be eligible for the service, you must be one of the following:
- a Victorian resident with a Medicare card and be aged 42 years or younger using your own eggs
- aged less than 51 years and seeking to use donor eggs (the egg being used must be 42 years or younger at time of collection).

Referrals
You will need a referral from your GP.
Your GP will send referrals to the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s at Sunshine Hospital. Referrals must include adequate clinical details and any relevant investigations. Incomplete referrals will be returned to your GP.
All referrals are reviewed under the direction of the Head of Gynaecology and appointments are allocated according to clinical need.
Once assessed by our clinicians, gynaecology appointments will be allocated to either Bacchus Marsh Hospital or Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s (JKWC) at Sunshine Hospital.
Melton Sexual and Reproductive Health Hub
You don't need a referral from your GP to access this hub. You’ll be seen by a specialist nurse/ midwife in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

Public Fertility Care
You will need a referral to access the service. Book in with your GP or specialist who can organise tests and investigations for you. Once your results are back, your GP will send a referral to the Royal Women’s Hospital. The Women’s will send you a letter once your referral has been accepted and then we’ll get in touch to arrange your first appointment at Western Health.
Locations
Our Gynaecology Unit is based at the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital and services all Western Health campuses (including Sunshine, Footscray, Williamstown, Bacchus Marsh).
The Outpatient Clinics are held at the Joan Kirner Women & Children’s Hospital (co-located at Sunshine campus).
Most of the surgeries are performed at the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

General gynaecology: Monday to Friday during business hours.
Other clinic hours are:
Colposcopy: Bacchus Marsh Hospital - Tuesdays and Monday and Wednesday fortnightly
Colposcopy: Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s (JKWC) - Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday
Early pregnancy assessment service (EPAS): JKWC - 8.30am – 5.00pm Monday to Friday
Gynaecology oncology: JKWC - Monday
IUD Clinic: Bacchus Marsh Hospital - Monday
